Dental Crowns and Bridges

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped "cap" to cover the tooth thence, it will remain the shape, size, strength and improve its appearance. Your tooth will be examined and preparation will be done before the surgery.

Dental Crowns might be needed in the following cases:

      1.       To safeguard the weak tooth from breaking or to hold together parts of break tooth
      2.       To renew an already broken tooth
      3.       To cover and support a tooth with a large filling when doesn’t have lot of teeth left
      4.       To hold a dental bridge in place
      5.       To cover severely discolored teeth
      6.       To cover a dental implant
      7.       To make a cosmetic adjustment

Crown maybe use on primary (baby) teeth in order to:

              1. Protect a tooth that has been very damaged by decay that it can’t support a filing.
       2.  Secure the teeth of a child at high risk for tooth decay.
       3.  To give proper requirements of dental care through decreasing the frequency of general anesthesia for children unable because of age, behavior or medical history.

Types of Dental Crowns

      1.      Stainless Steel

Prefabricated crowns that are used as a temporary measure to protect the tooth. It’s commonly used to children because they don’t need multiple dental visits and much budget wisely than custom-made crowns and prophylactic dental care.
      2.       Metals

These are used in crowns that include gold alloy, other alloys or a base-metal alloy. It doesn’t break even though for biting and chewing forces. Their good choice for out-of-sight molars.

      3.       Porcelain-fused-to-metal

It looks like a normal tooth, however, sometimes the metal placed beneath the crown’s porcelain can show through as a dark line, especially at the gum line and even more so if your gums recede. These crowns might be a good choice for long bridges wherein the metal is needed for strength and for front or back teeth.

      4.       All-resin

These are less expensive, however, they are more prone to fractures and they wear down over time. Theirs usually used only for temporary crowns.

      5.       All-ceramic or all-porcelain

Dental crowns might be more suitable for people with metal allergies and they provide a better natural color match. All- ceramic crowns are a good choice for front teeth.

      6.       Temporary versus permanent

Mostly permanent crowns are made in the dental laboratory while temporary crowns can be done in the dentist’s office. Temporary crowns are made of acrylic or stainless steel and can be used as a temporary repair until the permanent crown is constructed by a lab.

      7.       Zirconia or milled crown

Dental offices that have the software and hardware can produce a crown by one visit only, no need for temporary crowns.
